Our touring map of
Historic Black Berea will be used to educate the public, including
children in the local schools, about the achievements, contributions
and heritage of African Americans who lived and worked in the southern
part of Madison County (KY) since the end of the Civil War . This
historic project promotes the conservation of African-American traditions
and culture by our process of getting community involvement in identifying
elderly Kentucky African Americans to be interviewed and in locating
documents and artifacts that could be useful in compiling the final.
A copy and transcript of each audio taped oral interview will be
deposited in Berea College’s Hutchins Library Special Collections
and Archives for future researchers interested in African Americans
studies. Having a map, audio tapes and picture album book will provide
a quick reference to encourage more public agencies and private
institutions to incorporate the African-American influence when
developing projects and programs related to the history and culture
of the Commonwealth
