Workshops for Students with Disabilities (Alternate Learners)
The Learning Center organizes workshops for students with ADHD and/or a learning difference to develop the skills they need to study and learn effectively.
Below are brief introductions to these workshops:
-
Master Notebook and 2 Column Note-taking Systems Workshop -
The MNB system, especially when combined with two column note-taking, can be a valuable asset for those who learn differently. This workshop is a basic introduction to creating your own MNB system and learning how to take notes in a new way. This note-taking approach is tailored to best benefit ADHD/LD students.
Note: If you plan on attending, please bring an empty 1" - 1.5" binder with you. All other supplies will be provided.
-
Active & Volume Reading: An Introduction -
The purpose of both Active Reading and Volume Reading is to aid the student in better comprehension of texts, while also cutting down on study time.
This workshop will guide the student through the steps of Active Reading for a more in-depth reading of the material, as well as through the steps of Volume Reading, for the student overwhelmed with reading. Active Reading aids in comprehension, efficiency, and preparation for an in-depth reading of the material.
Volume Reading works much in the same way, but is designed to be implemented when a large amount of reading is assigned.
* Please try to bring something to practice these techniques on in class, such as a book or a 4-5 page article from class.
-
Study Tips/Test Prep -
This workshop will inform the student of alternative ways to prepare for exams that will help them better comprehend material while avoiding "cramming" and reducing stress.
Students will also learn study tips that will aid them in recalling information while taking their exams, as well as advice that will help to reduce their test anxiety.
-
Concentration and Procrastination Tips -
Is it often difficult for you to concentrate in classes or while studying and doing homework? Do you tend to put papers or homework off until the last minute? If so, this workshop is for you! Students will learn ways to help hold concentration longer and aid in procrastinating less.

Intro to Inspiration & Voice Recognition Software -
Do you have problems creating outlines? Would you like to merely speak and have Word type for you? Well, Berea has free software to aid you in doing both. Inspiration is a free software that is available on the Berea server for students to use. Inspiration Software is helpful with creating cluster charts and outlines. Voice recognition software allows one to speak into a microphone, the software transferring it into text.
