Sabbatical Planning
A Sabbatical Preparation Workshop is offered each spring and fall for faculty who are planning for upcoming sabbatical leaves. Participants work with Learning Center Associates and faculty who have recently returned from sabbatical to brainstorm projects and share advice. Participants can get help writing their proposals or post-sabbatical reports.

The Learning Center Staff are available to assist Berea College faculty and staff in locating funding sources for various activities:
- Disciplinary research;
- Completion of a book, journal article, creative project, or other scholarly work
- College sabbatical leave (to supplement the partial salary available for full-year leaves)
- Work in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

American Association of University Women (AAUW) -
One of the world's largest sources of funding exclusively for women, the AAUW Educational Foundation supports scholars around the globe, teachers and activists in local communities, women at critical stages in their careers, and those pursuing professions where women are underrepresented. Supports women doctoral candidates completing dissertations or scholars andthose seeking funds for postdoctoral research leave from accredited institutions.

Fulbright Scholars -
The prestigious Fulbright Scholars program offers a number of grant opportunities to faculty. Among them:
- The Traditional Fulbright Scholar Program sends 800 U.S. faculty and professionals abroad each year. Grantees lecture and conduct research in a wide variety of academic and professional fields.
- Awards in the Fulbright Distinguished Chairs Program are viewed as among the most prestigious appointments in the Fulbright Scholar Program. Candidates should be senior scholars and have a significant publication and teaching record.
- In order to extend the scope and reach of the traditional program in a new era, the Fulbright Senior Specialists Program has been initiated to provide short-term Fulbright grants of two to six weeks.
- The Fulbright New Century Scholars Program enables 30 top academics and professionals from the U.S. and abroad to collaborate for a year on a topic of global significance. For the current year, the research theme is "Higher Education in the 21st Century: Global Challenge and National Response."
- The objective of the Alumni Initiative Awards program is to help translate the individual Fulbright experience into long-term institutional impact. To this end, the program provides small institutional grants to Fulbright alumni to develop innovative projects that will foster institutionally supported linkages and sustainable, mutually beneficial relationships between the Fulbright scholar's home and host institutions. Under the guidance of an appointed Distinguished Scholar Leader, NCS Scholars engage in collaborative, multidisciplinary examination of a topic of universal concern and together seek solutions to critical issues affecting all humankind.
- U.S International Education Administrators are invited to apply for two- to three-week summer seminars in Germany, Japan, or Korea. The seminars are designed to introduce participants to the society, culture and higher education systems of these countries through campus visits, meetings with foreign colleagues and government officials, attendance at cultural events and briefings on education.

National ACademic ADvising Association (NACADA) -
Supports research activity and publication in the fields of academic advising through a series of dedicated research awards and grants. Research support may be awarded for proposals submitted for the purpose of contributing to the field of advising-related research. Most grants are for single-year proposals, but multiple-year grants also may be awarded.

American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) -
Designed to permit scholars, after many years of full-time teaching and administrative duties, to devote a full year to research and writing in such fields as Literatures and Languages, History, Anthropology, Political Theory, Philosophy, Classics, Religion, the History of Art, Linguistics, Musicology, and the study of diverse world civilizations and cultures.

American Philosophical Society -
Maintains five major grant or fellowship programs in a wide range of fields. Its Franklin Research Grants, Phillips Fund Grants for Native American Research, and Library Resident Research Fellowship programs award small grants for modest research purposes. Its Daland Fellowships and Sabbatical Fellowships programs award much larger grants in highly selective competitions.
Awards are made for research only. The Society makes no grants for academic study or classroom presentation; for travel to conferences or workshops; for non-scholarly projects; for assistance with translation; or the preparation of materials for use by students.

National Endowment for the Humanities -
Supports individuals pursuing advanced research in the humanities that contributes to scholarly knowledge or to the general public's understanding of the humanities. Applicants may be faculty or staff members of colleges or universities, or of primary or secondary schools, or independent scholars or writers.
Fellowships provide support for projects that can be completed during the tenure of the award, as well as for work that is part of a long-term endeavor. Recipients usually produce scholarly articles, monographs on specialized subjects, books on broad topics, archaeological site reports, translations, editions, or other scholarly tools.

National Institute of Nursing Research -
Supports clinical and basic research to establish a scientific basis for the care of individuals across the life span-from management of patients during illness and recovery to the reduction of risks for disease and disability, the promotion of healthy lifestyles, promoting quality of life in those with chronic illness, and care for individuals at the end of life.
NINR accomplishes its mission by supporting grants to universities and other research organizations as well as by conducting research intramurally at laboratories in Bethesda, Maryland. The research fosters interdisciplinary collaborations to ensure a comprehensive approach to research on health promotion, illness, and disabling conditions.
This approach is especially relevant in research such as that aimed at long-term care for the elderly, the special needs of women across the life span, bioethical issues related to genetic testing and counseling, biobehavioral aspects of managing the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, end of life care, and environmental influences on risk factors related to chronic illnesses.
NINR research includes all age groups and is based on adequate gender and minority representation.
