Access: There are no restrictions placed on viewing this collection. Reproduction for publication is at the discretion of Berea College.

Provenance: Originally Berea College Library staff placed these photos in mixed vertical files on Appalachian subjects. The photos were later gathered into a separate collection. The original sources for most of them are unknown, though Berea College professor James Watt Raine initialed some of them, and others were taken for a survey of rural schools. Still others are preserved from the Knott County Bicentennial Exhibit. Many of the older images were used in the Berea Quarterly, an early journal of Appalachian Studies, published from 1895-1916.

Overview

This collection is made up of black and white photographic prints of various sizes, some with dates and/or notations, preserved for their relevance to Appalachia. They include portraits of individuals, industries, structures (homes, schools, churches), landscapes, crafts, and roads. Schools and communitycenters are the most frequent subjects (some 180 photos). The photos are arranged alphabetically by subject.
