The publications files of the Annville Institute Collection consist
of news publications generated at the school by the staff, student
publications, and brochures and
pamphlets generated primarily by the New York City offices of the Reformed Church.
The publications are arranged in the order in which they are described in the
following section; i.e., Staff publications are first in the series; student
publications begin with the Annville Echo, 1930-1932; and Reformed Church
of America Publications begin with the Year Book and Course Study of the Mckee
Academy, 1911.
Initiated by the staff in 1966, Echoes from the Hills (extant editions
1966-1968, 1971-1978), was a news publication for the outside reader describing
student / staff activities, new programs, the contribution of various volunteer
work groups, and the visits of members of other RCA congregations. A special
edition, published in June, 1978, describes the budget cutbacks which were to
result in the closing of the school, asks for donations to help keep the school
open, and includes personal testimonials of support from a cross section of the
staff and administration.
Although there are some gaps in the record, the student publications span a good
number of years (1930-1978). The majority of these are either school newspapers
or memento / yearbooks put together by a graduating class. Also of note in this
section of Series IV are some writings by the Class of 1924 which include a short
story and a handwritten copy of the first student newspaper; and the Eclipse (1974-1975),
a much later publication which was published on-campus by the journalism class
and intended to become a county newspaper.
The brochures and pamphlets published by the Women's Board of Domestic Missions
(later changed to the Board of Domestic Missions) are informational brochures
regarding the work of the Jackson County missionaries, including but not limited
to those at Annville Institute. As a whole, they are explanatory and promotional
in nature: i.e., they try to explain and describe as well as win support for
the missionary program in Jackson County. Not only the earlier but also some
of the more recent brochures describe the missionaries' impressions of economic
conditions, the educational system, the traditional culture and religious practices
in Jackson County. A few worked towards articulating the role of the Annville
Institute as an educator of Appalachian young people. Other brochures support
such programs as the hospital at Gray Hawk, or the elementary schools and religious
programs, which the RCA established or assisted. Some are brief histories of
the county or vignettes of families in the area; some outline the history and
philosophy of the Reformed Church.
