Students working in the Berea College bakery, ca. 1920

Being founded in an isolated area, Berea quickly became an almost self sufficient community. The College operated a bakery, poultry farm, dairy farm, cheese factory, brick yard, hospital, elementary school, newspaper, taxi service, hotel, and many other enterprises. All of these provided for the local community as well as the College and served as places of employment for the student labor program. As times changed most of these enterprises were closed or sold. The bakery closed in 1974.
