John Jacob Niles, 1934
Niles was a folk music collector and served as Ulmann's chauffeur and assistant. He is shown here with Virginia Howard of Brasstown, North Carolina. The instrument is an Appalachian (or "lap") Dulcimer, which was brought to the region by early European immigrants.
