John Hanson, was one of the abolitionist founders of the Berea College and the community. Hanson built a sawmill in Berea which provided lumber for the early buildings. This cast iron eagle stood atop the sawmill, which was burned during the American Civil War. Hanson salvaged it from the wreckage and later presented it to the College.
