Summer Abroad Scholarships and Grants

Thanks to the generosity of alumni and friends of the college who value international education, several endowed scholarships and grants provide financial support for Berea students to participate in Summer Abroad programs, including Berea International Summer Term (BIST), KEI, and KIIS. This funding is awarded on a competitive basis.
Students participating in an approved summer program abroad may be awarded one of the following:
New Horizons Grant
The New Horizons Grant is awarded to sophomores, juniors, and seniors participating in an education abroad program of at least three weeks in length. New Horizons Grants provide a variable level of support but may cover up to one-third of the total cost of a BIST course or up to 25% of other programs.
John B. Stephenson Scholarship for Non-Western Study
The John B. Stephenson Scholarship for Non-Western Study is awarded to a limited number of outstanding juniors and seniors participating in an education abroad program in Africa or Asia. The program must be at least four weeks in length, and the applicant cannot previously have studied, traveled at length, or lived in the proposed country. The Stephenson Non-Western Scholarship is awarded in place of a New Horizons Grant and may cover up to 40% of the total cost.
In addition, qualified applicants may be awarded one of the following in addition to New Horizons or Stephenson Non-Western:
Carlisle Keller Macdonald Scholarship
Mrs. Carlisle Keller Macdonald, Class of 1938, established the Macdonald Fund for Study Abroad to encourage students to enrich their education at Berea through an academic program abroad. Applicants must have a 3.3 GPA or higher and great financial need, and must be studying abroad for the first time at Berea.
