Scholarships and Grants

Berea College offers a variety of education abroad scholarships and grants that have been made possible by the generous donations of alumni and friends of the college who value international education. Many of these endowed scholarships and grants are administered by the Center for International Education, while qualified foreign language majors and minors are eligible for funding from the Department of Foreign Languages.
Fall and Spring
Financial support from Berea College is available for any major in the form of the Berea Term Abroad Scholarship, which covers up to 75% of the cost of a semester abroad (maximum of $11,000).

In addition, external scholarships from the federal government, foundations and other organizations provide additional support for a semester abroad.

Short Term and Summer
The New Horizons Grant and John B. Stephenson Scholarship for Non-Western Study provide financial support for any major to cover a portion of the cost of a Short Term or summer abroad. Funding is especially generous for those with great financial need who are studying abroad for the first time.

Travel Grants
Two travel grants provide funding for visits to cultural and historical sites beyond the scope of a formal education abroad program:
- Emilie Strong Smith Travel Grant (Fall or Spring*)
- Wade Francis Travel Grant (Summer)
Foreign Language Grants
Qualified French, German, Spanish and Classics majors and minors may apply for a grant from the Department of Foreign Languages for selected education abroad programs. Other Berea Scholarships and Grants
In addition, other offices and academic departments award scholarships that can be used for international study or travel:

- Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (BMW Scholarship)
