Anthony Smallwood of the European Union's Delegation to the USA will be introducing the European Union.

Mr. Smallwood currently serves as the spokesman and press and cultural counselor for the European Commission's Delegation to the USA in Washington DC where he leads the Press and Public Diplomacy team. Prior to this assignment, he headed the Commission's regionalized Delegation in Trinidad and Tobago.
He began his career as an economist in the private sector and then as an academic researcher on the modern Middle East AND Spent most of his professorial life as a diplomat; beginning as a British official and then working with the European Commission in Brussels and abroad. During his career he has traveled widely with posting in Europe, the Americas, the Caribbean, the Middle East and Africa.

His principle responsibilities have been in external relations and development cooperation, but he also helped promote international higher education cooperation during his time managing the European Commission's ERASMUS program.

Mr. Smallwood was educated in the United Kingdom at Keele and Oxford Universities and at Reed University in the USA. He has published on scientific and higher education cooperation.
