Multicultural Mandalas of the Silk Road
(Educational Opportunity)

Dr. Michelle Wang of Georgetown University will discuss the Mandala of Eight Great Bodhisattvas, a Buddhist art form that flourished at Dunhuang in what now is China's Gansu Province during the 8th, 9th, and 10th centuries. Dr. Wang will use her analysis of the mandala's cultural and historical contexts to shed light on how transcultural communication and interreligious dialogue over the Silk Roads helped to define both Chinese and Tibetan Buddhism during this period. Co-sponsored by the Asian Studies Department and the Art Department.
