Concert Choir Performs Myel Byrd Mass
(Performing Arts)

The Berea College Concert Choir and Chamber Singers will perform a mass setting composed by one of its graduating senior members on Sunday, April 3 at 3:00 p.m. in Gray Auditorium. Myels Mass is an original composition about thirty minutes long, in which the composer takes a creative approach to traditional conventions surrounding the mass liturgy set to music. With influences by composers such as Claude Debussy, Franz Schubert, Duke Ellington, and Moses Hogan, Byrd has created a mass for his Senior Music Capstone Project that is a synthesis of jazz, Latin, and gospel styles within the modern choral tradition. Myel Byrd will be joined by his wife Nikki Byrd, who will be a soprano soloist and co-conductor for the work, along with the composer. Other featured performers will include family members J. Richard Byrd, father of the composer (keyboards), and Taviel Byrd, the composer's brother (drums). Music faculty member Lindsay Clavere will be a piano soloist and collaborator in the performance. Please join us for some music and worship and the premiere of this extraordinary piece!
