Constitutio of ASU

ARTICLE ONE-NAME
The name of the organization is Asian Student Union (ASU).

ARTICLE TWO-PURPOSE

The objective of the Asian Student Union shall be:

  • To bring together all Asian students, Asian-American students and all the other members of the campus family to share the cultures of many lands in Asia and the world
  • To bring diversity and to carry out spirit of unity, tolerance, cooperation and brotherhood by introducing the rich history, culture and traditions of Asia to the campus community
  • To bring a wide selection of programs and events in the campus so as to help familiarize the campus community with different aspects of the various cultures in Asia.

ARTICLE THREE-MEMBERSHIP
ASU is open to all fulltime students, staff and faculty of Berea College.
Membership dues are $5.00 per academic year and are payable by the second week of the fall term or within two weeks of joining or within the date set by the executive committee. 

ARTICLE FOUR-ADVISOR(S) AND OFFICERS

Officer positions for ASU are President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Public Relations, Club Coordinator, and Webpage Design Coordinator. The Advisor for ASU will be a member of the Berea College General Faculty/Staff.   The Advisor will monitor the activities of this organization. He/she will also uphold the Constitution and provide advice and assistance to the members and officers.
           
          Section One:  The executive officers, (i.e., the President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Public Relations) shall be elected from the membership.
Section Two:  The term of office for the executive officers shall be one year.  The election shall be held in the spring so that the council may prepare for the Fall.  The council will have the option of changing the dues and meeting times each year, in order that the constitution need not be revised each year.

  • The election of the officers shall be held during the month of April, each spring semester.
  • The election shall be by secret ballot during the meeting itself.
  • In case a vacant position exists due to unforeseen circumstances, the Executive Council has the right to appoint an acting officer to assume the post vacated until the term ends.  If it is the position of the President that is vacated, the Vice-President shall become the President and the Executive Council will appoint a new Vice-President.
  • In case of a tie during the election, members may be allowed to re-vote.  In case of a second tie, the President shall cast his/her vote.

          Section Three: To ensure a smooth transition from year to year, the President from the previous year will be available to the executive officers and the club as a whole for advice and guidance unless the President has graduated.
Section Four:  The duties of the Executive Council are: to act as a steering committee; to act as a governing board to formulate plans or decisions between meetings.

          Section five:  There shall be one or more faculty advisors.

ARTICLE FIVE-DUTIES FOR OFFICERS, COMMITTEES, AND COUNCILS

         Section One:  The Executive Council and the committee chair people shall constitute the Council.  The duties of the executive officers shall be as follows:

  • The President shall preside at all meetings and assume the responsibility for administration of actions voted by the Executive Council and the organization
  • The Vice-President assumes the responsibilities of the President when the President is absent.
  • The Secretary shall keep the minutes of the meeting and shall conduct correspondence as may be directed. He/she is responsible emailing all the officers about the meetings
  • The Treasurer is responsible for the financial transactions of the organization and in keeping a record of the financial account.
  • The Public Relations Officer shall be responsible for directing organization of all social activities of the organization.
  • The Club Coordinator shall plan and coordinate programs that address the needs and/or interests of students living in Berea College. These programs provide information about Asian culture and diversity. The programs are designed to increase student from Berea College familiar and interest in Asian language and culture.
  • The Webpage Design Coordinator is responsible for updating ASU webpage.
  • The Advisor shall be a consultant and supervisor for the organization

         Section Two: Committee chair people are to be appointed by the President and approved by the Executive Council. The working committees are usually related to club programming.

ARTICLE SIX- Meetings
            The Executive Council shall meet once a week and whenever it should prove necessary. The Council shall meet once a month or when necessary. The whole organization shall meet twice a month and/ or  whenever necessary.

ARTICLE SEVEN- DUES
            The dues shall be set by the executive council yearly. All members are subject to the assessment of dues.

ARTICLE EIGHT- CONSTITUTIONAL REVISION
This Constitution may be revised, amended, or updated by a two-thirds vote of all members and the approval of the appropriate administrative body.
