2005 Denny Plattner Awards
This year’s Denny C. Plattner awards were judged by Bo Ball (fiction and non-fiction) and Andrew Plattner (Poetry). The Denny C. Plattner awards honor the best of the work published by Appalachian Heritage. For the 2005 competition, as in past years, the judges found all works deserving of high praises and future acclaim. Here are the winners:

Fiction

Winner: "The Dulcimore” by Emma Bell Miles (Fall)

Honorable Mention:
“Almost Persuaded” by Gretchen Moran Laskas (Winter)

Poetry

Winner: “Tristia” by Kathryn Stripling Byer (Winter)

Honorable Mention:
“Lifting” by Glenis Redmond (Fall)
“ No Breast Augers in Heaven” by James B. Goode (Winter)

Non-Fiction

Winner: “A Hike Into Heaven’s Hell” by Tim Homan (Summer)

Honorable Mention:
“Different Drummer, 1957-58” by Sam L. Martin (Winter)
