Henry D. Shapiro died
on January 24 in York, Pennsylvania, at the age of 66. His
book, Appalachia
on Our Mind: The Southern Mountains and Mountaineers in American
Consciousness, 1870-1920, is one of the most significant
and original books in the field. He was a professor of History
at the University of Cincinnati from 1966 until his retirement.

Frank Jamison’s “My Mind Wonders” took first prize at the Fourth Annual Robert Burns Poetry Award/Terry Semple Memorial Contest of 2003. Other winners include: Connie Jordan Green "One Moment Remembered," Jo Ann Pantanizopoulos "Sunday Afternoon," and Chuck Bowers "Oi'm Scotch Irish; Why d'ye ask?" The Knoxville Writers’ Guild and the Scottish Society of Knoxville sponsor this annual event.
