For eight years, the photographer for this issue, Tim Barnwell, served as executive director of the Appalachian Photographic Workshops in Asheville, North Carolina, and before and since his photographs have graced the pages of virtually every tasteful American magazine from House Beautiful to Newsweek, from Outdoor Photographer to American Craft. His images have hung in the permanent collections of the High Museum in Atlanta, the New Orleans Museum of Art and other fine galleries throughout the country.
The pictures on pages five, twenty-seven, seventy-one and the
inside back cover also appear in The
Face of Appalachia: Portraits from the Mountain Farm by Tim Barnwell, published in 2003 by
W.W. Norton of New York City. The rest of the pictures have not
been previously published, but several of these subjects, including
those on pages forty-one and sixty-two, also appear in the book.
Most of the pictures here and in the book were taken in the nineteen
eighties in Madison County, North Carolina, but a few in the
subsequent decades and some in surrounding counties, like the
picture on page forty-one of James Griffith plowing with a horse
in the Pensecola community of Yancey County.
