Thursday, October 1 – Friday, October 2 – Appalachian Heritage Festival, Shepherd College, Shepherdstown, West Virginia. Appalachian Heritage will be exhibitors for the keynote address and the Appalachian Heritage Awards event Thursday night at Erma Byrd Hall and Friday at the Frank Theater for the Appalachian Heritage Concert Festival. Editor George Brosi will participate also in a Friday event called, “The Appalachians: Writers and Renegades with George Brosi and Silas House.” Silas is the featured author for the 2009 event.
Friday, October 2 – Sunday, October 4 & Friday, October 9 – Sunday, October 11 – Return of an Angel: A Play about Thomas Wolfe by Sandy Mason in Asheville, NC. Return of an Angel, in its third season at the Asheville Community Theater, depicts the conflicts that Thomas Wolfe felt as he used his family and the citizens of Asheville as the subjects of his explosive first novel Look Homeward, Angel. It also explores the feelings of his family as they were left to deal with their unexpected fame. For more information click here.

Saturday, October 10 – Berea – Ron Evans of Corbin will sign copies of his books - When the Leaves Have Fallen and Spring Softly into Summer from 11:00am-2:00pm at the Kentucky Artisan Center , located at 975 Walnut Meadow Road , just off I-75 at exit 77, admission is free.
Sunday, October 11 – Ashland – Appalachian Angels Reading at Boyd County Public Library, 2:00pm.
October 16-18 – The Kentucky State Poetry Society annual Workshop and Awards Weekend will be held at Pine Mountain State Park, Pineville, KY. Registration for the awards weekend begins on Friday, Oct. 16 at 3:00 pm at Pine Mountain State Park. On Friday evening at 7:00 pm there will be Publishing Panel discussion by authors who have published books this year. Headlining the event will be Dorothy Sutton, Sylvia Davis, E. Gail Chandler, Charles Semones, Irma Cooper, and Tony Sexton. On Saturday, Oct. 17 at 11:00am Gurney Norman will speak and at 2:00pm, Frank X. Walker, Affrilachian Poet, will lead a workshop and sign books. Walker is the keynote speaker at the banquet Saturday evening. If you plan to attend, please reserve rooms by September. Tuesday, October 20, 2009 - The Kevin Brown Reading will be held at Lee University in Cleveland Tennessee. Kevin Brown will read from his new collection of poems Exit Lines October 20 at 7:00 p.m. in the Edna Minor Conn Theater. There will be a brief Q&A afterwards. Copies of the book will be available for sale and signing. This event is free to the public. For more information click here.
Saturday, October 24 – The West Virginia Extravaganza in Bridgeport, West Virginia. The Bridgeport Public Library invites all West Virginia authors to attend the event from 12pm to 5pm. The authors will sell and sign works as well as present short programs on their work. The event is free and open to the public. October 28-31,2009 - The Meacham Writers' Workshop will be held on the campus of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and Chattanooga State University. The program consists of readings, discussion sessions, and group conferences. The conference welcomes non-writers who are avid readers of contemporary prose and poetry, as well as school groups. The workshop is free and open to the public; there is no registration. The conference is open to persons of all age, race, religion, sex, veteran status, national origin, or disability. Guest writers expected to attend are Susan Thomas, Randall Brown, Earl Braggs, Tom Balázs, Chad Prevost, Rebecca Cook, Deborah Brown, Sebastian Matthews, Philip Graham, Richard Jackson, Art Smith, Sybil Baker,Red Heart the Ticker, and George Singleton who had a story in the Spring 2009 issue of Appalachian Heritage. The Fall 2009 Meacham begins Oct. 28th with a student reading at the Guerry Center, UTC. For more information click here.
