Sunday, March 1 -- Carlisle -- Artcroft kicks off a four-part series of readings of original works by well known Kentucky authors, 2:00-5:00pm at the Neal Welcome Center in downtown Carlisle. The event is free to the public. Featured at the first reading and book signing will be Kentucky Poet Laureate Jane G. Vance, writer and poet Mary Ann Taylor Hall and Liz Mandrell. Artcroft, located in Nicholas County, was founded in 1999 and hosts creative individuals seeking retreats to concentrate on their work. The second event is scheduled for Wednesday, April 29th at Al's Bar in Lexington featuring Ed McClanahan and the young poet's of Lexington's Holler Group. Artcroft is hosting the series of readings to showcase Kentucky's talented authors and to raise awareness of the creative center's contribution to literary and artistic endeavors in the state. Donations will be gratefully welcomed to support future young residents.
Friday, March 13 – Appalachian Heritage Featured Author Reading with Jayne Anne Phillips, author of the novels Lark and Termite, Motherkind, Shelter, and Machine Dreams, will read in the Appalachian Center Gallery in the Bruce Building on the Berea College campus. This will be a celebration of the Winter 2009 issue of Appalachian Heritage, which features Phillips as our Featured Author. Photographer Tom Martin, our Featured Artist for the Winter 2009 issue, will also be at the reading with copes of his prints and books for sale. Refreshments will be served at 7:30 p.m. and the reading will begin at 8:00 p.m.
Saturday, March 14- The 18th Annual AAUW (American Association of University Women) Author's Brunch will be held in the Activities Room at Berea College (Alumni Building) from 10:00 am - 12:30 pm. The year's featured authors are: Jon Carolftis, Lucille Bowling Carloftis, Will Hillenbrand and Keven McQueen. Authors will speak about their work and their books will be available for purchase and signing. Tickets are available for $20 by calling Jennifer at 859-582-3676 through March 6.

Tuesday, March 24, March 31, April 7 – The Appalachian Arts Craft Center will offer a "Poetry Writing Workshop" with Carolyn Scarbrough, in Norris, Tennessee, from 6 to 8 p.m., on three Tuesday evenings at the center. Students can be new to writing or have more experience. Each session will include a writing exercise and discussion of the writing process. Carolyn Scarbrough holds an MFA in writing and literature from Bennington College and taught creative writing for the University of Gavle, Sweden, for many years. She is co-chair of the Bennington Collective, a post-graduate writing workshop, and her poems and stories have appeared in many literary journals. Students should bring a poem to the first class. The cost is $55 for craft center members and $65 for nonmembers. Registration deadline is March 19. Friday, March 27 – Saturday, March 28 – 20th Annual Writers Workshop, sponsored by the Foothills Writers Guild will be held at Anderson University in Anderson, South Carolina. Early registration by February 28 is $125. After February 28, registration is $150. Friday registration only is $45. Saturday registration only is $115. Student registration is $25. Fees include workshop, materials, snacks, Friday evening meal, continental breakfast, and Saturday luncheon. Saturday, March 28 – Alabama Bound: Celebrating Books and Authors. Annual fair celebrating Alabama authors and their publishers. Bring family and friends, meet your favorite authors, buy their books, and hear them read from and talk about their work. Book signings will follow each presentation. Friday, March 27 – Sunday, March 29 – The Thirty-Second Annual Appalachian Studies Conference will be held at Shawnee State University in Portsmouth, Ohio. This year’s theme, “Connecting Appalachia and the World Through Traditional and Contemporary Arts, Crafts, and Music,” will be explored through panels, workshops, and presentations. Monday, March 30 – Thursday, April 2 – Spring Literary Festival. Western Carolina University’s seventh annual Spring Literary Festival will feature A. Manette Ansay, Brian Brodeur, C.S. Carrier, Robert Conley, Jan DeBlieu, Pam Duncan, Scott Huler, Jeffrey Lent, Ron Rash, Jewell Parker Rhodes, and Steve Yarbrough. All events are free and open to the public. All events take place in the UC Theatre, on the 3rd floor of the University Center at Western, except for Jan DeBlieu's reading on Thursday, April 2, which takes place in the Coulter Auditorium.
