Friday, April 11- Saturday, April 12—The 6th Arnow Conference on Appalachian Literature and Culture will be held at the Somerset Community College. Featured events will include workshops for writers or fiction, poetry, and creative non-fiction, readings by published authors, academic presentations about Appalachian literature, great food, lively music, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Thursday, April 24—Sunday, April 27—Asheville Word Fest 2008 in Asheville, NC, will feature nationally acclaimed writers and poets leading workshops and giving readings. Among the featured writers are Coleman Banks, Kathryn Stripling Byer, Fatemeh Keshavarz, Galway Kinnell, Simon Ortiz, and Patricia Smith. All events are free and open to the public. Friday, April 25 at 7:30 p.m.— Sharyn McCrumb, author of The Songcatcher and The Rosewood Casket, will read in the Commons of the Woods-Penniman Building on the Berea College Campus. This will be a celebration of the Spring 2008 issue of Appalachian Heritage, which features Mildred Haun, author of The Hawk’s Done Gone. Randy Ball, whose photographs are featured in the Spring 2008 issue, will also be at the event with prints for sale. Refreshments will be served at 7:30 p.m. and the reading begins at 8:00 p.m.

Saturday, April 26—The Knoxville Writer’s Guild Gala will be held to celebrate writers in Knoxville and the nearby region. A celebration will be held for the 2008 contest winners and for the winner of the Career Achievement Award. For more information, contact pamstrickland@mac.com or pquinntn@comcast.net.
