Saturday, February 23—Writing The "Harry Potter Book" with K. Gail McAbee, in Asheville, North Carolina. Award-winning author K. Gail McAbee will be at The Writers' Workshop of Asheville to teach a class on Fantasy Writing. The class will study the elements of writing fantasy and science fiction for young adults, such as designing a believable world, and creating memorable characters, both human and otherwise. We will also discuss examples of successful books in these genres, from C.S. Lewis and Tolkien through Heinlein's science fiction juveniles of the 50s. Three pages or a synopsis may be brought to the class for review. The class is open to any writer, and will meet at 387 Beaucatcher Rd., Asheville, on Saturday from 10-4 pm. Medicine Show, is teaching a Getting Published class in Charlotte on Feb. 23. Writers of fiction and non-fiction books and articles will learn how to prepare their work, such as writing the cover letter, query letter and synopsis; where to submit your work; the differences between selling fiction and non-fiction; how to find a reputable agent, and more. In-class writing exercises will also be given. Schubert is also editor of Diversity Woman Magazine and N.C. Career Network Magazine. The class is open to any writer, and will meet on Saturday from 12:30-5:30 at the J.C.C., 5007 Providence Road. The cost is $75, or $70 for Workshop members.
