Saturday, November 3—Vanderbilt poetry teacher Bill Brown will lead a Poetry Writing Retreat for the Writers’ Guild 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at a private home in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains. Saturday, November 3—The Writers' Way with Veronica Fisher. This class is primarily for people who are experiencing major life transitions and want to unleash their creativity through writing. In-class writing exercises and discussion will be led by Fisher, a journaling instructor and psychotherapist for 25 years. Saturday, 10-4 pm. $75/$70 members. Saturday, November 3—Grant Writing Simplified. The basics of grant writing will be taught, such as ensuring a match between your mission and the funder, and how to write a strong proposal and narrative. Individuals may bring a two-page proposal summary to the class for review by Workshop grant writers, who have 20 years' experience generating funds from private foundations. Saturday, November 10—The Art of Fiction Writing with Dale Neal. The salient aspects of writing fiction will be discussed, combined with writing exercises to help tap spontaneity and overcome barriers to creativity. Neal, who writes for the Asheville Citizen-Times, has had his short fiction published in numerous literary journals, and has won three Fellowships to the Virginia Center for Creative Arts. Saturday, November 10—Writing And Revising Fiction with Karen Ackerson. The class will receive information on writing fiction, such as creating memorable characters, honest dialogue and sense of place. Discussion will include examples of award-winning fiction, and students may bring 5 pages to the class for discussion. Saturday, November 17—Poetry Workshop with Adrian Rice. In this workshop for intermediate to experienced writers, information on shaping and polishing one's poems will be given. Students may bring three poems to the class for review.  Rice was born in Belfast and earned his MA in Anglo-Irish Literature at the University of Ulster. His poems were first published in Muck Island, and his collection of poems, Impediments, won critical acclaim. He received the Sir James Kilfedder Award, and was nominated for the Irish Times Poetry Prize for The Mason's Tongue. Saturday, 10-4 pm. $75, or $70 for Workshop members. Saturday, November 17—Writing Creative Non-Fiction Articles with Mike Weinstein. Beginning to intermediate writers will receive tips on interviewing, researching, writing the query letter, and selling human-interest stories to newspapers and magazines. Participants may bring up to 3 pages of writing to be critiqued by the group. Weinstein is features editor at The Charlotte Observer, and has won numerous awards for his editing work on lead articles. Meets Saturday, 12:30-5:30 pm. $75/$70 Workshop members.
